ARTIST STATEMENT
Judaism is at the heart of who I am. As a design student, this extends to my design work. I love researching Jewish history and, in turn, my history. As an American college student, it is hard to be a loud and proud Jewish woman among much of the hate on campuses around the world, and in my own. Despite this, my art and design practice is one of the ways I fight back and stay strong within my identity, and not let anyone scare me into hiding. Outside of working in the design field, it is vitally important for me to create work using traditional media, especially fiber arts. Weaving, knitting, and sewing are art practices that keep my mind balanced and ready to tackle the designs I create. Working with my hands in traditionally women-dominated practices is another way my art and design practice empowers me. I also find that much of my design process is heavily inspired by my fiber work. My appreciation for preparation and ideation before I even open a design program comes from how heavily the planning and pre-production process is emphasized in fiber arts. This comes along with my own personal interests in history and Judaism, and the process of research is something I find interesting and essential for any of my projects. Tradition and history are a vital part of my work, and I find myself constantly mixing that with my modern and simple design sensibilities, a fun and inspiring challenge.
